Petrus Launches New Schools and Churches Division
As the 2010 National Catholic Education Convention (NCEA) gets underway in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Petrus Development is pleased to announce the creation of a new division: Petrus Schools & Churches. Read the official announcement.
In partnership with Pennington & Company of Lawrence, Kansas, this venture will work with schools and churches to create sustainable fundraising programs, conduct feasibility studies, and provide capital campaign counseling. Click here for the official announcement.
Peter de Keratry, CEO and founder of Petrus Development states, “I and many of our employees and friends have been positively affected by the education we received in Catholic and private schools. We believe that more can be done to help Catholic and private elementary schools, high schools and churches of various denominations to become more financially stable. It is because of this need that we have launched a venture called Petrus Schools & Churches.”
Bob McKenney, Vice President of Pennington & Company, states, “this venture is different from almost any fundraising program available today because we seek to make the work of creating a sustainable fundraising program possible even for the smallest school or organization. Our system will work in school environments with little or no staff and is intended to begin the process of creating meaningful relationships with alumni, parents, and friends of the school or organization.”

Attendance at 2010 Petrus Leadership Conference Sparked Giving for Organization
“There are many campus ministers out there who think that their campus ministry center or campus is just too small to benefit from development efforts, but I want to tell you that such thinking is incorrect,” said Fr. Doug Baily. This Director of Catholic campus ministry at Florida Institute of Technology ministers at a very small non-denominational private technological University consisting of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students and about the same number of graduate students. Upon arrival at the campus, Catholic campus ministry shared a three bedroom house with the Protestant Campus Ministry and Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. The organization had $11.65 in the checking account. There was little interest from either of the other campus ministry programs to engage in any form of development or expansion. The chapel was in a garage and after the Mass was finished, Fr. Doug would hit the garage door opener and say, “Go, the Mass is ended.”
A conscious decision to expand the ministry and help was needed. After consulting with a professional Catholic fund-raiser and attending the CCMA development Institute, an endowment to support Catholic Campus Ministry was established before the world wide recession. Today Catholic center enjoys a two hundred seat chapel and a 40 seat side chapel for daily Mass.
Fr. Doug describes their current development efforts in this way, “After the market collapse, I decided that we needed to bulk up our endowment and so I attended the Petrus Conference in Orlando. I came away with two excellent ideas. We have been remodeling our kitchen as a result of a generous contribution from a former student. We utilized the “baby shower for a new kitchen” idea that I picked up from the Conference and raised just under a thousand dollars. But the best idea was the matching Sunday collection. Our normal collection is slightly under $800. But on the matching collection and endowment Sunday we raised $7,985 that will be matched by a donor for a total of almost $15,000 to go into the endowment. I don’t remember how much I paid for the Conference but in the few months since the event that has to be well over a ten-fold return on the investment in the conference.”
Congratulations Fr. Doug and Catholic Campus Ministry at Florida Institute of Technology!

Petrus Leadership Conference Concludes
Over 80 people representing in excess of 50 Catholic organizations from throughout the US gathered in Orlando, FL for the 5th annual Petrus Leadership Conference to learn, network and enhance their knowledge of effective fund development practices.
Effectively integrating major gifts into an organization’s development plan was a common theme of presentations throughout the conference. Audrey Kintzie, ACFRE and Vice President/Chief Development Officer at the Courage Center in Minneapolis, MN, challenged conference-goers to rethink their perception of development from “asking for money and the obligatory annual request for support” to “an invitation extended to someone that asks them to become part of the work for your organization and is based on on-going sustained relationships between the donor and an organization.” Throughout her presentation titled Major Gifts: Cornerstone of Your Development Program, she illustrated the steps, components, context and blessings that a major gift program can have on an organization.
Some of the other 24 presentations included Asking for and Closing Major Gifts, Making the Ask: Role Play to Success, Donor Motivations for Planned Giving, Ethical Considerations for Fundraising, Are You Really Ready for a Capital Campaign? And PLC-to-Go: Great Ideas, Best Practices, and Resources for the Road among others.
The Conference concluded with “Where Do You Go From Here,” a presentation by Monsignor Vince Krische which offered inspiration, insight and direction for implementing the lessons learned throughout the conference. Inviting participants to implement many of the lessons and insights gained at the conference, Krische challenged participants to embrace the work of development so that the impact of our Catholic faith can continue for generations to come.
